Tribute on the Larry Monroe Bridge

There is a little bridge in Travis Heights which is a mosaic memorial to Larry Monroe, a local musicologist and DJ. This part is a tribute to the late, great Doug Sahm.

Music brings joy.

We support a group here in town called Swan Songs. At their gala the other night, they showed photos of musical groups/acts/singers entertaining people who are in the final stages of their lives. Here you see a barbershop quartet doing just that.

Fredonia! A new band in town

A friend of ours plays bass in this new band that was playing at Parker a few weeks ago. They got their name from an old Marx Brothers film. Christopher Cross is the leader.

Jazzing it up at Parker

Parker is a beautiful new venue in Downtown Austin, a few blocks from our house. We love jazz and this place is so comfortable and nice. Here you see owner Kris Kimura playing flute.

Carrie Rodriguez sings and plays

Local entertainer Carrie Rodriguez did a concert at the Long Center's Rollins Theater the other night. On the right, playing guitar, is her husband. The bass player is a stellar musician who was in Leonard Cohen's backup band for many years.

Dreams Come True

Long ago some Austin lady musician legends made a wonderful album together. They had a reunion at Antone's last month.  Jackie got this great shot and said:

"We had fun at Antone’s for the reunion of “the girls” who made the 1990 “Dreams Come True” album – one of our favorites. Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli, of course."

Jackie made it to Joe Ely's 70th Birthday Bash at the Paramount.

Jackie got this fantastic picture of Gary Clark, Jr, at the Paramount. She says it was a rare acoustic concert and fantastic.

Doug Sahm Mural

This mural between a liquor store and a dive bar on East 11th is definitely Doug Sahm but why he's offering "Lost in Austin" graffiti paint is a bit more of a mystery.

The Flatlanders

Jackie snapped this. She says: "The Flatlanders – Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock – from their June 24 gig at Hogg Auditorium. They rarely play together, but when they do, they’re awesome." Agreed.

Great band!

Our friends Chris Gage, Christine Albert and Ernie Durawa were rocking out the other night at Donn's Depot. Ernie is in the Texas Music Hall of Fame and Christine is the former Chair of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Recording Artists. Chris has played with house bands for TV shows.

An octet -- one we won't forget!
