Day 38-Partriotism

What do patriotism and our current situation have to do with one another? The residents of this condo seem to think that the flags show solidarity. But viruses are global with no respect for borders really. So it goes. I understand that we are going to stop immigration to solve the crisis. Forgetting that farmworkers, health care workers, and lots of essential underpaid foodservice and grocery workers are immigrants. I hope the out-of-work line up for these jobs. Puzzling.

Over the Rainbow

Parades are made for flags and marching. In this group are some from the Confederacy that were kind of controversial this year.

My Weather Vane...Soon to Disappear

A building is going up at Fifth and Colorado. People are always asking me about things which block our view or will in the future. I'm most sad about the giant Texas flag that is actually pretty far away in the Texas State Cemetery east of IH35. I like seeing it there and...it tells me which way the wind blows. Since we are only on the tenth floor it doesn't take much height in a nearby building to block something from our view.

Mexican Consulate

The Mexican Consulate occupies a building just off Fifth Street and Baylor where a big typesetting company used to be (back when type wasn't set on a Mac!).

Hooray for the Red, White and Br. . ., um I mean Blue!

This local bar was gearing up for the Fourth the other day with a "Red White and Brews" Concert. I thought that we would show the colors today-- Happy Fourth to you all from the Live Music Capital of the World!

Patriot

I snapped this during SXSW on East Sixth. "Can I take your picture?" I asked. He nodded. I didn't ask all the cool kids along the sidewalk. I was flipping through facebook last night and saw a picture of a guy with a flag snapped on Congress taken by one of my fb acquaintances. He was sitting on a planter but holding his flag high. Might be the same guy. He didn't have a sign or shout a message.

F1 at Oil Can Harry's

I didn't notice this until after F1 was over but Oil Can Harry's got into the spirit of car racing.

Proudly Serving

FFP and I noticed this in the window of a garage apartment in Clarksville. Apparently the blue stars represent a loved one serving in the military.

The Lone Star flies over the Texas State Cemetery on a cloudy day. This is an interesting place to walk on the east side.

Freedom

Oil Can Harry's Bar replaced their usual colorful flags with the stars and stripes for the holidays. Here's wishing everyone freedom.

The other day someone was flying the Texas Flag on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. Took this with my iPhone. Flag obscures the Austonian, W Hotel under it, 360 to the left.

One Picture

What's happening today? Well, UT football, Texas Rangers in game three of the Series and, of course, Saturday adjusted Halloween. So, I offer a picture taken from my balcony earlier in the month with a long lens of a Texas Flag with an orange sky that you can take for Halloween or burnt orange (UT's colors). Your choice. We plan to be in front of the TV tonight catching bits of the sporting events and maybe looking out at people downtown in costumes. (Already saw that last night.)

Summer Salute

Allen's Boots on SoCo was flying some Texas Lone Star Flags the other day and it looked pretty neat with the old stones and stars on the building and the summer blue sky.

Texas Flag

This is a very large flag at the Texas State Cemetery in east Austin. I can see this from the condo when it's flying so I stopped by to shoot a picture the other day.

Tax Protest

Apparently there were tea parties all over the country to protest big government and big spending. This fellow at the Austin City Hall had a "Don't Tread on Me" flag from the American Revolution. Apparently a number of people don't think we can spend our way out of a depression. It's no accident the protest was scheduled for April 15...the day our taxes are due in the U.S.

Texas Flag at Four Seasons

Next to the Four Seasons hotel a condo tower is rising. I've shown you the flags there before with the Canadian one popping out in the wind. The other day I caught the Texas flag snapping in the wind with the new construction behind it.

The Texas Rowing shop on the Hike and Bike trail has special oars for its classes. They are easily spotted with the red, white, blue or all three in the Lone Star image. Here they are arrayed in the boat house.
