Tracking Independent Progress

The Independent Condominiums rise on the west bank of Shoal Creek. That's our building (the 360) in the background on the other side of the creek.This will be the tallest building in Austin when completed.

Yes, another construction shot, but this one is kind of amazing. With these huge devices, they can pour concrete on these huge buildings so quickly.

The center stage at the Zach Scott fundraiser had a rockabilly theme on these panels -- Elvis and Johnny Cash.

Loved the flowers at our table for Red Hot and Soul-- the Zach Scott Theatre fundraiser -- not long ago. Very pretty! A great crowd and nice tablemates.

Professor Harold Hill sings his signature song

This young man did a fine job singing 76 Trombones at the Zach Theatre's big party "Red Hot and Soul" the other night.

When you see them like this, just after a show, it's hard to believe these fit young people--the professional troupe of Ballet Austin-- were just on stage in fanciful costumes performing "Alice In Wonderland."

Our friend Jaime Witts danced the lead role in Alice in Wonderland the other night. What a performance!

Ten Years Later

Ten years ago today we started this blog with a picture of the Ballet Austin building which was under construction. That picture, looking east, showed the AMLI on Second building still under construction. Our building was just rising up looking the other direction. Looking west today from that spot, ten years later, you can see our building on the right, occupied now for about nine years. You can see a building under construction just to the left of that. This is the Independent Condominiums which will rise across the creek to be the tallest building in Austin. To the left of that, you can see the completed Seaholm Condominiums. The cranes across Nueces from the Ballet are for an office building called Third+Shoal. It's amazing what a difference ten years makes.

Somewhere in South Austin we walked down a street we don't usually take and voilà we encountered this mildly disturbing yard art.

This bit of art for your yard or home is available on South Congress. As someone who drove a lot of VW Bugs, images of them always make me smile.

We bought these delicious pierogis at the Farmers Market on a recent Saturday. That is horseradish on top.

Jazzing it -- Miles and Miles

Our friend Jeff Lofton (on trumpet) and his quintet put on a great show at the Stateside Theater the other night. It was a tribute to Miles Davis and a big house showed up.

We got to sit onstage with friends on a recent Sunday afternoon during the Zach Theatre production of "Lady Day."

Unique Shopping on SoCo

The TripleZThreadZ shop on South Congress serves up vintage Western shirts with their custom embroidery. They are pretty mind-blowing as the mural outside implies.

Abandoned Possessions

We strolled up South Congress the other day to do a little shopping and have some breakfast. At the bus stop, a bike, a golf bag, a slow cooker and some other stuff were abandoned, In any case, no one else was around. We took a different route home so....

One Shoe

In the ongoing saga of lost things, particularly shoes, Jackie submits this one, found near her apartment.

Taking her seat at the dais

This photo from the mid-1970s shows the seating of one of the first women to ever hold an Austin City Council seat. Her lapel button says "Uppity Women Unite." Now in her eighties, Emma Lou Linn is still a professor at a local university. The man seating her was part of the old guard.

Beef Tartare -- what a treat

Beef tartare is a perfect nightcap. This version at Fixe, close to our condo, comes with pickled gooseberries, crispy oysters, cornmeal pancakes and celery root remoulade.
