Winter Sunrise

Occasionally we still get a nice sunrise even though we are being hemmed in by buildings. This view is over some shorter buildings and toward the lake and Rainey Street and East Avenue. Appropriately, there is a crane in the view.

Rising On Red River

This construction on Red River is getting started in earnest. I believe it will be an office building across from the Hotel Van Zandt.

Lunch Money?

This construction worker, likely working on the 70 Rainey project, uses this old phone booth reimagined into an ATM for late-night partiers although he's probably looking for some cash for a food truck for lunch.

Rainey rising

This is the 70 Rainey Street project that is going up as we speak. Lots more people downtown and along this popular recreation area.

Another bar on Rainey! Oh -- Redux!

Local bar Lustre Pearl will have new life on Rainey Street. Hula Hoops?
I took a photo of this sign outside the place the other day.

Look out!

This menacing sea monster looks like a grown-up slinky. We spotted him in the Rainey Street area the other day.

RIP Geraldine

Geraldine, the Rainey Street guinea fowl, got run over recently. The Royal Blue Grocery in the area put her silhouette in their window. Here's her facebook page.

New Haven pizza -- also in Austin

I've never tried this type of pizza, either. Looks like I have my work cut out for me.

Detroit pizza in ATX

I guess we should try this version of pizza out sometime. I'd like to know what Detroit pizza tastes like.

Mezcal Bar

You have to be a pretty serious tequila drinker to try this little bar out!  It's in the Rainey Street part of town.

Geraldine Goes Forth

Geraldine, the Rainey Street peahen, takes a look at herself in a handy bumper. She is the unofficial pet of the neighborhood.

Just a Facade

Sometimes they 'renovate' old houses on Rainey Street rather than razing them and starting over. It adds some ambiance and, I think, makes permits easier to get. Today is theme day at City Daily Photo. The theme is facade. And that's all that's left of this structure a few weeks ago.

Reindeer Games

Just off Rainey Street is the G'Raj Mahal and their property is often used by the Austin Bike Zoo to store there creations. This contraption of a string of reindeer was on display last Sunday.

Dwarfed

This house, just off Rainey Street, is dwarfed by the high rise going up in its backyard.

Rainey Street Ride

We were walking on Rainey Street the other day, checking out all the changes there when I noticed this dolled-up pickup.

Booze and breakfast

This sign at a Rainey Street eatery suggests that you might want to mix some good food with your booze.  A worthy suggestion, indeed.

Curry-lovin' Cat

We were walking by G'Raj Mahal, a terrific Indian restaurant in an outdoor setting in the Rainey Street district one recent morning.  Here you see a patient feline who is hoping to beg some bites of chicken curry.
