Natural World on the Move

This art car was parked on Taylor Draper the other day, taking advantage of a shady spot on a hot day. It wasn't abandoned and has come and gone several times since. It is decorated in a 'natural' style with astro turf, real branches and leaves, etc. The dashboard is covered with rocks and the 'theme' continues in the interior. People's cars say a lot about them, but I'm not sure about this message.

Vietnamese Sandwiches

I took this picture in 2005 on North Lamar. I'm not sure if this sandwich shop is still there but the offerings were generous and tasty and affordable. I don't seem to be able to take pictures outside of downtown these days so I thought I'd dig through the archives for a picture further afield.

The Tallest Bird in North America

This sculpture of a whooping crane is about three times as tall as the bird (at five feet or so). The real bird is the tallest in North American and it winters in the Aransas Refuge off the Texas Coast. You find this tribute sculpture at the fancy shopping area in North Austin called The Domain.

Boots Were Made For Walking

The Capitol Saddlery sign is still on Lavaca but the shop has moved north to Research (aka 183) according to a sign in the window. Which stretches the distance from the actual Capitol building which is about six blocks from this location. What was once a convenient location for Texas politicians and University professors to get boots made and repaired is now a little more out of the way for them. (I haven't seen it in its new location, by the way.)

Commuter Rail

Commuter Rail? Austin doesn't have it. But the Capital Metro people got money for it and besides tinkering with tracks and stations they have bought some expensive rolling stock. I was driving around near Metric Boulevard and 183 and found the cars, looking all spiffy. They won't have riders for years, I guess.
