A worthwhile thing to do after school

I hope that some kids try these classes out -- being able to take good photos is a nice skill to have.

Photo of the Year

On a brisk February morning, I was at the Farmers Market which happens each Saturday, one block from the 44-story tower where we live. I had walked over to buy a couple of tacos and was taking some random photos when I saw this little girl skipping along. I clicked at just the right instant to catch her mid-air. After some discussion, we decided to choose this shot as the Photo of the Year for 2019. It symbolizes the human touch of joy and play among the high-rise swath of buildings where we make our home. Have a Happy New Year! Click here to see the photos of the year from around the world. Click here to see the ones we chose from on this blog for 2019.

Art in Action

The Blanton Museum has an event called SoundSpace every quarter or so. At this event, a group was performing something that involved the use of cell phones in the atrium. The blue tiles and the white shape in the left corner are parts of works of art. The photographer on the stairs is the final element in this picture. I love capturing museum goers in museums.

Looking down, looking good.

Lots of photographers like to have sessions on top of the parking garage directly below us. I thought that this shot would be a good one for the "Looking Down" theme.Click here to see other interpretations of today's theme.

Pickup photos

This display is part of the exhibition at the Ransom Center at UT. A professional photographer perched on an overpass and shot photos of men headed to work, laying in pickup beds.

Focus! Focus!

Lots of people use the top of the parking garage across from us for shoots. This couple was using the waning sunlight not long ago to snap a few photos.

Filming

I have no idea why this guy was filming across from the giant star at the Texas State History Museum. But I like pictures of people taking pictures.

Looking Out

One morning I shot FFP's picture while he was trying to get the perfect sunrise picture from our condo. Today is City Daily Photo theme day. Today's theme is 'looking out' which is bound to be interpreted in a variety of ways. Click here for other interpretations.

Say "Cheese"! Or at least "Coffee"!

I wonder how many people have had their photo taken by this sign on the side of Jo's Coffee on S. Congress.  These folks are having fun with it.

Photographer

This is Greg Sells. And, yes, that's an old school film camera around his neck. He is a fixture at Austin live music events, taking his photos. He especially follows female singer/songwriters. Local film maker Jenn Garrison made a short documentary about him.

I Am Austin

Walking on Second Street a week or two ago, my friend and I noticed that an empty shop (where some froufrou shop has flashed and failed) had been taking over by an art project. The window of the shop was full of Polaroids of people holding a little black board that said "I am ____" and they had been able to fill in the blank before the artists of the installation shot the Polaroids. The public is invited to come by during certain hours and participate, apparently. (It was closed when we were there.) I found this statement in a news release on the Internet:

"Jackie Young + Cybil Gustafson will present a collaborative installation titled I Am, an interactive photography exhibition that invites patrons to provide statements that describe themselves to accompany individual Polaroid portraits taken by Jackie Young. Performance artist Cybil Gustafson will hang the photos and statements. From the artist’s statement: “I am interactive. I am a large-scale installation. I am a representation of individuals. I am the story of a community. I am. We are.”
I may show you some details from this smaller format picture in the coming days. But if you are curious about what some of the statements say try to guess from the smaller format picture.
