Full house!

We went to Parker Jazz Club the other night, expecting a light crowd - wrong! Glad to see that Austin is catching on to this venue.

Senior recital for Sarah

Our talented friend Sarah Milligan was hitting some serious jazz licks during her senior recital at the University of Texas the other night. Her mom was there to cheer her on, as were we.

A song from yesteryear

I thought I would put up a photo from a bygone era. The woman at bottom left here is a good friend of ours -- she is a professional singer with a degree in music and she used to travel around Central Texas performing. This photo is from Renaissance Faire, an event that still happens just outside of town.

Hallelujah!

Our friend Eli was blowing the top off at Church on Monday one a recent -- yes, Monday night. They play at the Gallery Above The Continental Club. What a great group of players. We go there and enjoy the music as often as we can.

Liz goes country

Our friend Liz Morphis was singing her heart out the other night at a fundraiser for Dress for Success. As you can see, it had a country theme.

Our gal Liz is crooning again.

It's been a while since I ran a shot of Liz Morphis and the Violet Crown Revue. Here they are at The Elephant Room on a recent night. Love those tennies, Liz!

Bands galore

I love to see all these signs around town on lampposts. Can't say that I have ever heard of any of these bands, but I'll bet some younger people will enjoy the concert.

Performance Yields a Laugh

It's the first of the month and, hence, theme day for City Daily Photo. The theme is 'Laugh.' We were at our new favorite Austin club the other night (Parker Jazz Club) when I captured this blurry but painterly photo of Matt Maldonado having a big laugh during a big band performance of mostly '20's and '30's tunes. The reed players really have a job during this set, switching around on tenors, baritones, altos, sopranos, and clarinets. Matt plays tenor and soprano. And has a big belly laugh now and then, too. University of Texas Symphony concert

Loved this concert by the UT Symphony on a recent night. They played Bernstein's "Age of Anxiety" which was really moving. An apt choice for this time in our history.

Two Basie greats

Terrific concert at Parker the other night. Two of the stalwarts of the Basie Orchestra-- Doug Lawrence on tenor sax and Butch Miles on drums. Yes, indeed. That is Kris Kimura, one of the club's owners, on baritone sax.

Chris and Christine Christmas

Our friends Chris and Christine were singing up a storm at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar last month. They drew a huge crowd and we wound up standing through the concert.

Dreams Come True

Long ago some Austin lady musician legends made a wonderful album together. They had a reunion at Antone's last month.  Jackie got this great shot and said:
"We had fun at Antone’s for the reunion of “the girls” who made the 1990 “Dreams Come True” album – one of our favorites. Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli, of course."

Brian Wilson

Jackie caught this concert at Austin City Limits Live on May 13: "Brian Wilson’s incredible band playing Beach Boys hits and the entire Pet Sounds album."

Surround sound at University of Texas

About a month ago, we heard a fantastic concert at The University of Texas by the UT Symphony. Magnificent!
