Capitalizing on Weird

Folks say 'Keep Austin Weird,' but when it becomes part of an ad campaign? Hmmm....

Decoration Details...East Sixth Street Bar

It's theme day. The theme is details. This is a detail of an extensive 'decoration' around the door of a bar on East Sixth Street. Yep, they've just nailed up beer bottle caps. I'm sure they had plenty of them. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the City Daily Photo family makes of this theme.

Taste Select Wines...or beer

Taste Select Wines has a carefully curated selection of beer (in bottles). I really enjoyed this Adventinus a while back when I was just in the mood for beer with my food.

Beer and Breakfast

They aren't saying beer for breakfast, no not really, huh? But you can get both all day. I like this joint, featured the other day even if I was somewhat disappointed to find it's a chain. A manufactured Irish experience, maybe. Although last time we were there I thought that a verbal altercation was going to turn physical and thought soccer might be the bone of contention. It certainly isn't Davy Byrne's in Dublin where, I' m proud to say I had a pint once. Maybe two

The Irish Angle

The Warehouse District has, at its heart, a part of Fourth Street where the sidewalks career up to the dizzying heights of old loading docks. The Irish Pub and Restaurant Fado flies its flags (I'm guessing that's the Irish flag whipped around the pole in the wind) in the shadow of Frost Bank Tower. Food here is good basic fare and, of course, Guinness is on tap.

Well, Not my Dinner

Actually, not entirely. Yesterday at dinner time I was very stressed and realized I'd only had half a blueberry scone and coffee (black) all day. We reheated steak and rabbit leftovers from Taste, made a Caesar salad and had a bottle of Chianti. I had a little sip of Sherry. Later, though, I was still hungry (not that many leftovers) and I made some nachos and had part of a Shiner Bock (a Central Texas brand). Little Woodrow's (and Star Bar in the backround) are on West Sixth Street.

Beers

Austin likes all kinds of beer as this (old) shop of the beer aisle at Grapevine Market shows.

Neighborhood Joint

Billy's on Burnet (we actually call it 'Billy Burger') is an amazing spot with many, many beers on tap, bar games, lots of TVs, an outside deck and really good burgers. Although I usually get the vegetarian Reuben with avocado standing in for meat. With fries. The array of beers on tap is a great temptation to me here, too.

Lots of Beer

The Warehouse District still has old buildings with high dock entrances that look like they were once warehouses. This one houses Ginger Man which is a bar with scores of beer on tap. Looming behind it is one of the first loft buildings built from the ground up, Plaza Lofts. Hopefully not every old warehouse will see the wrecking ball, leaving some low-slung character-filled buildings in the area. A few blocks over, our new high-rise home rises out of what was a vacant lot in my recent memory.

Flavors of Austin

When we were on South Congress a couple of nights ago, I tried out the 'Night Landscape' Scene mode of my Nikon Coolpix P4 to catch the neon at Doc's. The place was packed. I venture to say the flavors were of beer! The place is an old car repair place and has kept that theme. Guess we will have to check it out some time. And have a beer.

Beers on Tap

I have selected a picture for today that FFP took a few weeks ago. He was looking around for red things for the July theme day. That candle looked more red in real life. We were in the Elephant Room, a basement jazz club on Congress Avenue. We were taking a tour around downtown, eating and listening to music. The sign shows all the beers on tap at the Elephant Room. What looks like a watermark on the picture is actually something printed on the plastic sign holder. On closer inspection it says "Celis Brewery, Inc., Austin, Texas." Celis was a Belgium-style brewery that was in Austin for a while. That brewery had bona fides because the family responsible for Hoegaarden apparently ran it. My favorite brews on this list are Guinness, Shiner Bock (a Central Texas brew), Schweider Weisse and Fat Tire (a Colorado brew in the Belgium tradition). There was a time when the American beer scene was not a pretty one. That time is long past, though. These beers are all on tap in this little basement joint playing jazz 365 days a year. Hmm...writing this up kind of makes me want to suggest 'beer' as a theme day. In any case, I think I'll give you an occasional beer entry for Austin. I'm really the beer drinker in the family although my tastes in adult beverages are fairly wide-ranging.
