Commuter Rail

Commuter Rail? Austin doesn't have it. But the Capital Metro people got money for it and besides tinkering with tracks and stations they have bought some expensive rolling stock. I was driving around near Metric Boulevard and 183 and found the cars, looking all spiffy. They won't have riders for years, I guess.

  1. Well I suppose any light rail system has to begin somewhere, though I'd think cars would come after tracks and stations. Silly me, obviously. Happy Easter weekend!

  2. The trains are really spiffy, if I do say so myself! The trains are being tested and the stations finished out, and you can expect a smooth ride from Leander to downtown come this fall. We're hoping to have a community-wide open house of sorts to get Austin folks acquainted with the sleek new trains... stay tuned!

  3. It's not light rail; and it can never be turned into anything like light rail; Capital Metro made the foolish choice to go down the same path as Tri-Rail in South Florida: commuter rail requiring shuttle bus transfers to get anywhere you actually want to go.

  4. Well, the truth is I voted no every time on this. I was pretty sure I had no interest in going to Leander and I'm moving downtown! However, a lot of people voted yes and the millions will be spent. I think it's interesting that my picture post inspired an official (well, from an alleged employee) response.
